A Gay Superhero Is Nothing New

The internet is buzzing with the news that Stan Lee is developing the first gay superhero – Thom Creed – a high-school basketball player who is forced to hide his sexuality as well as his superpowers. But all the news sites seem to missing out on one important piece of information.

Creed will only be the first gay superhero on TV in a show for the US cable channel Showtime. However, there have been Spandex-clad superpowered homosexuals in comics for years. And no, we’re not just talking about all those unsubstantiated rumours about Batman and Robin stripping down to their utility belts and snogging in the Batcave between adventures. There have been a number of genuine, loud and proud gay and lesbian superheroes from Marvel and DC.

Missing from your list is Extrano from The New Guardians (DC 1988) who was flamboyantly gay and also HIV positive. The New Guardians wasn't much cop though and got canned after 12 issues so I can see why you might not remember it.

It's a shame the URL for this page is "http://www.sfx.co.uk/page/sfx?entry=a_gay_superhero_is_nothing", really. A gay superhero is not nothing.

Usual Stan Lee, self-promotional BS. Just like when he says of Daredevil, "I'd never seen a blind superhero before!". Oh really?
WHAT ABOUT DOCTOR MID-NITE OVER AT DC, STAN!?!
TWENTY YEARS BEFORE DAREDEVIL!

Anyone see the mock up in The Sun yesterday?
It had him in bright pink spandex with a large handlebar moustache - not cliched or insulting at all *rolls eyes*

Ah, The Sun. Serving the lowest common denominator since 1969.

@127.0.0.1 - I'm pretty certain that those nasty homophobes at SFX are in fact completely innocent of editing the URL of the page to read at the end "a_gay_superhero_is_nothing"

Whatever the system they use to generate their webpages from their webserver will more than likely have limited the number of characters available.

I know this internet lark is a bit mindblowing, but really, try to keep some perspective...

Someone should warn Stan Lee that Spiderman is about to web the back of his head. Poor chap.

Stan Lee does a cameo in just about every single adaption of a Marvel comic. Wonder if he'll do a cameo in this. And what as?
