Videogames don’t come more nerve-jangling than the Resident Evil series. Say what you will about him, but there’s little denying Danny Dyer has a surprisingly fervent fanbase. New flick The Dead comes in at a highly respectable 31st place in our rundown of the top 66 zombie films of all time, which is pretty darn impressive when that means it’s tucked between Lucio Fulci’s infamously gruesome Zombie Flesh Eaters and 2009 Hollywood smash Zombieland. That’s not bad going.

The Dead sees a zombie apocalypse unfolding among the rolling dunes of a West African desert. When an evacuation flight crash-lands, an American military engineer is stranded in the middle of an outbreak of the undead, and teams up with a local soldier who’s deserted his unit to search for his son.

By all accounts, the crew put their lives and sanity on the line to complete the film, having to contend with everything from malaria to police corruption. But it paid off, because the setting means you’ll never have seen a zombie film quite like this before. Thanks to seriously gruesome effects and some stunning scenery, The Dead is our favourite zombie horror of 2011. If you read SFX regularly, you’ll know that we often rave about Arrow Video releases. This is a company that lavishes attention on the packaging and extras of its horror DVDs. Well, a trio of classic zombie movies from the catalogue has just been reissued in new cases as part of the ArrowDrome range, and we’ve got sets of all three to give away to six lucky readers.

George Romero’s 1978 classic Dawn Of The Dead shows what happens when a group of survivors holes up in a shopping mall. Mixing action, humour and an attack on consumerism, it’s a must-own for any self-respecting zombie fan. Day Of The Dead, his 1985 follow-up, is brilliant too. Following a mixed group of civilian and military survivors sheltering in a bunker, it’s an unremittingly bleak film that also features, in the shape of Bub, a partially “domesticated” zombie, probably the best undead character of all time. Finally, there’s Italian director Lucio Fulci’s 1981 horror The House By The Cemetery. Banned as a video nasty in the early ’80s, it sees a couple moving into a New England house, only to discover the living remains of a previous resident – a mad doctor – lurking in the cellar. Yikes!

At The Matrix Live, Berlin’s NDR Pops Orchestra will play Don Davis’s score in front of a screening of the movie, showing off a composition that may not be as hummable as Star Wars, but deserves to be recognised as one of the most interesting pieces of film music of recent years. “It’s not music like John Williams or Max Steiner, but it has its own quality,” says conductor Frank Strobel. “The film was a new step in cinema, and the music represents the new step as well. When you listen carefully to the music you understand that it’s not what is usually done in films. It’s a special score and it’s representative of the ideas in the film, and I think that helps make the film stronger.”

It’s a longstanding joke that the BBC has every single Trooping The Colour in the archive, but numerous episodes of Doctor Who are missing. It’s unlikely, however, that anyone would go back to animate any absent moments from the Queen’s annual birthday shindig.

French Revolution-set William Hartnell serial “The Reign Of Terror”, of which two out of six episodes have been lost in time, is the latest Who story to get the holes filled in with animation. “It’s a bloody good story!” says producer/director Austen Atkinson, from aptly named production outfit Theta-Sigma. “It’s also beautiful, and we think the incredible detail we put into our backgrounds will lend itself well to the sumptuous costume drama – which is what this is, really.”

Atkinson describes the style as “traditional 2D animation”, and says that his team has had very little material on which to base their reconstruction. “We’ve got the camera scripts, some set photos, we have the audio track, and we have the existing episodes, but very little else,” Atkinson admits, adding that he called in the University of Paris’s archaeology department to help make the restoration’s vision of France look accurate. “It’s very clear to me that this is an archival exercise like taking a wonderful painting off the wall and restoring it. We’re treating it like it’s a holy grail.”

Jordan Reyne’s new album, Children Of A Factory Nation, is being released in September and follows a family who lived in Wales in the late 1800s during the Industrial Revolution. Like many alive in their time, they faced problems relating to difficult working conditions, poverty, and the tyranny of circumstance.

So, sharpen your pencil and tug your thinking cap on. Jordan and novelist Andy Remic of Anarchy Books are running a short story writing competition to celebrate! The challenge is to write a short story surrounding any characters from Children Of A Factory Nation using Jordan’s lyrics or the facts about their real life counterparts as a starting point. The competition will be judged by Andy Remic, sci-fi and fantasy author, John Jarrold, esteemed agent with decades of experience in the publishing industry as both editor and agent, Dave Bradley, editor-in-chief of SFX magazine, Lee Harris, editor at Angry Robot Books, James Lovegrove, New York Times bestselling author, Gary McMahon, rising star of the horror genre, Jared Shurin of popular online magazine Pornokitsch, and the incredible Hugo Award winner Ellen Datlow, veteran editor in horror and sci-fi fields. That’s quite a panel to shove your work in front of.

First prize is publication in the album’s accompanying magazine and on the website, £100, a t-shirt, a signed copy of the album Children Of A Factory Nation, and the first three Anarchy Books ebook releases, in all digital formats. We’ve had a happy run of breathtaking sci-fi debuts in the past few years: Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 and Duncan Jones’ Moon for example. Arguably the best of the bunch, however, is Gareth Edwards’ breathtakingly good road movie/love story/creature feature mash-up Monsters.

Edwards’ unique twist on the typical monster movie: humanity has become apathetic towards the presence of giant, bioluminescent, squid creatures after they arrived on Earth six years prior. Mexico has become an infected zone and quarantined, unfortunate for journalist Andrew Kaulder (McNairy) who begrudgingly agrees to find his boss’ daughter, Sam Wynden (Able) and escort her through the infected zone to the US border.

Receiving a pair of 4.5 star reviews in SFX 208 and 203, we praised the convincing central relationship (McNairy and Able are real-life man and wife) and impressive, subtle special effects – particularly as they were all created by Edwards’ on his own laptop. More often than not American remakes of revered foreign originals are a bad idea. A very bad idea, just look at what happened to [Rec]. But Let Me In is different, an American remake that not only captures what made the original so special, but in some ways (whisper it) improves things.

Doctor Who’s robot dog K9 blasts into his own live action, sci-fi adventure series out on DVD now, and to celebrate we have a 3ft long montage photo of the cast, signed by all the cast including John Leeson (K9’s voice both in both Doctor Who and the new series), to give away!

Originally created for Doctor Who in 1977, K9 has long been an iconic television character. He was created by Bob Baker & Dave Martin, who had been long standing contributors to the show from the Jon Pertwee days through to the Tom Baker era. The robotic dog worked his way into the nation’s hearts and he made on screen come back in 2006 showing up in the David Tennant story “School Reunion”.

K9 now blasts into his own sci-fi/adventure series combining comedy, action and suspense, which comes to DVD this month. The series combines live action and stunning visual effects and comes from one of his original co-creators Bob Baker.

London, the near future: orphan teenager Starkey ultimately plans to bring down the system but for the time being he is prepared to simply slip through the cracks. He and his friend Jorjie hide out in the residence of reclusive scientist, Professor Gryffen and his errand boy Darius, who are experimenting with alien technology. The Professor blows a hole in the fabric of space/time and they are attacked by two reptilian warrior JIXEN, but they are saved by a small dog-like robot, K9, who follows the Jixen through the portal.

K9 and Starkey, with the assistance of Jorjie, Darius and Gryffen, become the Earth’s front line defence against dangers threatening from anywhere and anytime in the galaxy. They will have a lot of fun, adventure, and some scares along the way, saving the earth from alien creatures, monsters and more than a few human threats.

The second season of the revamped V premieres on 4 January in the States with an episode called “Red Rain” and network ABC has released a bunch of promo pics. To be honest, most of them make the episode look about as exciting as congealing cabbage casserole, but one of them caught our attention, mainly because it’s crying out for a caption. Mimic: Director’s Cut Blu-ray review

A few weeks back we kicked off this brilliant compo with a unique prize. We asked you to write a description of the 11th Doctor in Terrance Dicks-style. Because, of course, Terrance became famous for his oft-used Doctor descriptions in the Target Doctor Who books we all grew up with and loved. You must remember the “crotchety old man in a frock coat” (first Doctor), the “baggy check trousers and a mop of untidy black hair” (second Doctor) and the “slight, fair-haired figure with a pleasant, open face” (the fifth Doctor). They were phrases that became legend. Canon almost. (The TARDIS materialising with a “wheezing groaning” sound certainly did).

Your task was create a similarly concise but memorable one-line description for Matt Smith’s Doctor, and winning entry will then be used in a forthcoming official BBC Doctor Who novel. The winner and two runners up also receive copies of all the 11th Doctor BBC novels (pictured above) and The TARDIS Handbook as well.

Terrance Dicks himself made the final selection, telling us, “These three all seemed to me to have the quality of unexpected imagination I was looking for.”

Terrance Dicks is a legend. He is the Tome Lord. As well as script-editing Doctor Who during the Pertwee years, he used to write the vast majority of the classic series novelisations, and his clear, concise, no-nonsense style was unmistakable. He also became infamous for the stock descriptions he would use, such as “a wheezing, groaning sound” for the TARDIS materialising and his classic introductions for each of the Doctors. So much so, some of these phrases have passed into Doctor Who lore. Let’s refresh your memories…

• The First Doctor was, “a crotchety old man in a frock coat with long flowing white hair”
• The Second Doctor had, “baggy check trousers and a mop of untidy black hair”
• The Third Doctor had,  “a shock of white hair, a hawk-like nose and an old/young face”
• The Fourth Doctor was, “a curly-haired man in a battered, broad-brimmed hat and an incredibly long scarf” with “a casual bohemian elegance”
• The Fifth Doctor had, “a slight, fair-haired figure with a pleasant, open face”

Which got us thinking. With BBC Books now releasing a brilliant range of all-new, totally original Eleventh Doctor novels, the new Doctor needs a Terrance Dicks-inspired description of his own. And SFX and BBC Books would like you to come up with it.

What will you pick up on? The bow tie? The chin? The dextrous fingers? The elbow patches? It’s up to you!

Terrance Dicks (it really seems like there should be a “Sir” in front of that) himself has agreed to judge the competition, and the prize is something quite unique: you get to see your phrase used in one of the future Eleventh Doctor books. How cool is that?

HOW TO ENTER: As the phrases need to be short and pithy, we’ve decided to run this competition through Twitter. So when you’ve composed you little snippet of literary genius, what you need to do is hop onto Twitter and message us @SFXmagazine with your entry – and be sure to include #SFXWHO at the end. That means you have 119 characters (unless you hate spaces) to compose your Terrance Dicks-style masterpiece of descriptive prose.
