Quicksilver Cast In The Aven… No, Hang On… In X-Men: Days Of Future Past
Can open. Worms everywhere. X-Men: Days Of Future Past director Bryan Singer has today tweeted that he’s cast American Horror Story star Evan Peters as super-speedy mutant Quicksilver… mere days after Joss Whedon revealed that the same character (along with his sister The Scarlet Witch) would be appearing in The Avengers 2.
Singer tweeted: “Before he was an #Avenger he was just a REALLY fast kid. Thrilled to say #EvanPeters is joining #XMen #DaysOfFuturePast as #Quicksilver.”
Mutants Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch – the children of Magneto – have always been a bit of a grey area when it came to who owned the rights. Both of them, as well as being mutants and having strong connections with the X-Men titles, have also been very prominent Avengers over the years in the Marvel comics universe. Last year Marvel movie boss Kevin Feige confirmed in various interviews that both Fox (which owns the movie rights to the X-Men) and Marvel (which owns the rights to the Avengers) could use the characters.
So many questions. Will Singer’s film make reference to Quicksilver’s parentage? Could he even be a member of the Brotherhood Of Evil Mutants (as he originally was in the comics)? Won’t non-comic-literate audiences find it all a bit confusing if he turns up in both films played by different actors? Or could his appearance in Days Of Future Past just be one of those unnamed cameos that fans pick up on, but may pass general audiences by (there have been loads in the previous X-films).
Or – and let’s get really geekily optimistic here – are Marvel and Fox paving the way for a crossover? Certainly it’s unusual for two rival companies not to enter into litigation in cases like this, so presumably they have keeping each other informed of their plans. On the other hand, Evan Peters doesn’t strike us as the kind of actor who’d fit into Joss Whedon’s Avengers ensemble (too teenagery, even though he’s in his mid twenties!). Then again, apparently Saoirse Ronan is in contention for Scarlet Witch in Avengers 2, and she’s seven years his juniour!
Things just became very interesting. This should fuel forums for months to come…
