In 2010’s Lords Of Shadow, age-old hack and slash platformer Castlevania received one of the most successful makeovers of its generation. Mirror Of Fate is the second chapter in the Lords Of Shadow “trilogy”. Available exclusively on 3DS, it’s a 2.5D action adventure that harkens back to the multi-character, maze-like structure of Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, with a combat system that carries over the best of its big-daddy-console predecessor. And it’s glorious.
Set shortly after Gabriel Belmont’s turn for the, er, cold and bitey, Mirror Of Fate tells the story of three generations of vampire-hunting Belmonts, including father/son combo Trevor and Simon and tormented vampire Alucard, as they stalk Dracula in his gothic castle. It’s told over three acts, in reverse-chronological order, with neat animated cutscenes sprinkled generously throughout. The plot hinges on a twist that anyone with knowledge of Castlevania lore will know before switching the 3DS on, but it’s a compelling narrative nonetheless.
Where Mirror Of Fate really shines is the combat and accompanying exploration. Each section of the castle is littered with collectables only the most thorough players will discover, find them all and there’s a special cut-scene to be unlocked. With four playable characters, each possessing unique abilities the game never runs out of new things to throw at you. It’s not strictly necessary, because even at its most basic level the whip/chain based combat, where split-second counters are all-important, is enormously satisfying throughout the game’s 9+ hour runtime. Puzzles are too few and far between, and a little more enemy variety wouldn’t have gone amiss, but otherwise Mirror Of Fate is not only one of the 3DS’s best looking games, but one of its finest to date.
