Warm Bodies Tops US Box Office On Very Slow Super Bowl Weekend

Zombie black comedy romance Warm Bodies has taken the number one spot in the US movies chart =on a very slow weekend for the North American box office which can only partly be explained by Super Bowl.

Summit Entertainment’s Warm Bodies was the only film to take more than $10 million, with Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters – last week’s number one – way back in second place with $9.2 million.

60% of Warm Bodies’ audience was female and 65% under 25, so it looks like the marketing succeeded in making it look like the “Twilight with Zombies” film that the director – and some journalists (our Ian Berriman included) – kept arguing it wasn’t. Still, the young ladies seemed to enjoy it, awarding it a A- CinemaScore (that’s a kind of exit poll they run in the US).

Another new opener, Sylvester Stallone’s Bullet To The Head, completely tanked in sixth place with $4.5 million. Mama – which is also a former number one –  continues to perform okayishly, bringing in a further $6.7 million for fourth place.

On Super Bowl weekend last year there were two films that took over $20 million, Chronicle and The Woman In Black. Resultingly, the box office this year for Super Bowl weekend is down a massive 27%.

Warm Bodies opens in the UK on 8 February (this Friday).
