Pacific Rim Will Tone Down The Portal GLaDOS Voice, Says Del Toro

Pacific Rim’s AI voice won’t sound quite as much like a certain cake-loving, maniac AI from the gaming world in the final film version as it did in the trailer.

When the Pacific Rim trailer was unleashed last month, Portal fans were surprised to hear the voice of the game’s villainous AI, GLaDOS on the soundtrack. It tuned out that the similarity was no coincidence – director Guillermo del Toro employed the same voice artist and the same digital audio treatment.

But now del Toro tells the Toronto Sun that the effect will be toned down in the final film – slightly – and there isn’t supposed to be any intentional crossover between Pacific Rim and Portal.

“I wanted very much to have her,” says del Toro, “because I’m a big Portal fan,. But just as a wink. She’s not cake-obsessed. She’s not out to destroy humanity. I said, ‘Look, there’s no AI. I’d rather have than GLaDOS’… but the filter we’re using is slightly less GLaDOS. Slightly. The one in the trailer I wanted to be full-on GLaDOS.”
