Defiance: How The TV Series And Game Will Work Together

Defiance is the majorly ambitious new show from Syfy that’ll be unleashed at the same time as an accompanying MMORPG game. We’re being told that the game is not a mere spin-off, but a full-scale compliment to the TV action, expanding the show’s universe. But how will the two interact with each other?

Developed by Farscape’s Rockne O’Bannon, the TV component of Defiance stars Grant Bowler (True Blood, Ugly Betty), Julie Benz (Buffy, Angel), Jaime Murray (Hustle, Warehouse 13), Tony Curran (Van Gogh in Doctor Who), Stephanie Leonidas and Mia Kirshner, and takes place on Earth in the near future after an aliens-vs-humans war has changed the face of the planet. Multiple races and factions are all jockeying for political power.

Defiance – the videogame version

Nathan Richardson, who is producing the videogame with Trion Worlds, has told Digital Spy about how the it will dovetail with the TV show

“We have what we call crossover events. They cross both the mediums and the two locations. We have events around every episode and they cross back and forth between the game and show. Something may happen in the game, and then it will cross into the show, and cross back. You can play the game and you don’t have to watch the show, but the storylines are mutually progressive…

“Basically, Defiance as a story progresses throughout the year. When the game goes up you will be doing missions, which leads into the show. We will then have crossover events as each episode premieres, but the game will also move the storyline forward too… During the period between season one and two of the TV show, we will have a certain amount of player influence and stuff like that which will affect what season two is.”

Sounds ambitious to us.

Defiance is scheduled to premiere on Syfy in April 2013, with the game hitting shelves approximately two weeks before.
