BBC To Adapt Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell

The BBC is to make a six-part adaptation of Susanna Clarke’s near universally acclaimed fantasy novel Jonathan Strange And Mr Norrell, to air on BBC One next year.

The book is set during the Napoleonic Wars in an England where magic once existed and is about to return. It is being adapted by Peter Harness (Wallander) and directed by Toby Haynes (Being Human, Sherlock, Doctor Who “The Pandorica Opens”, “The Big Bang” and others).

It is being produced by Cuba, the production company behind BAFTA-winning Boy A and critically acclaimed Broken. Each of the six episodes will be an hour long. Sounding like a winning combination to us.

The BBC One has also announced that Toby (Being Human) Whithouse is writing a new series for the channel – The Game. Although it’s not SFX territory, we thought you’d be interested; it’s a Cold War spy thriller set in the secretive world of 1970s espionage.
