• Here’s the BBC One Christmas trailer with clips from Doctor Who’s “The Snowmen”.

Deadline reports that Cate Blanchett has been cast as the evil stepmother in director Mark (One Hour Photo) Romanek’s live action Cinderella. There used to be a time when leading actresses complained there were no decent roles in movies for mature-but-not-yet granny material women; seems like live action fairy tales have filled the vacuum, with respected actresses queuing up to play evil queens/evil stepmothers/evil witches. But what is this teaching our kids about middle-aged women?  First announced in 2010, this new live-action Cinderella will feature a script by Chris Weitz (director of The Golden Compass and The Twilight Saga: New Moon) and will be a brand-new take on the classic fairytale. Hopefully it’ll address the safety issues surrounding the wearing of glass slippers.

• Having got Daredevil out of his system, The Grey director Joe Carnahan is in talks to direct a comic book adaptation… Hang on, didn’t we write this story last week? Oh hang on, different comic book adaptation. Deadline reckons he’s now in discussions over the big screen adaptation of the Image Comics title Undying Love. Written and illustrated by Tomm Coker and Daniel Freedman, the high-concept vampire tale is set in modern day Hong Kong, where former soldier John Sargent falls for a beautiful Chinese vampire called Mei. To free her from the curse, Sargent must kill the vampire that sired her. Considering Carnaham has also written a Death Wish remake script for Paramount, is about to direct a US TV pilot, Those Who Kill (an adaptation of a Danish show), is connected to a film called Continue at Fox, and has that Nemesis project with Mark Millar bubbling away, you have to wonder which of these projects is going to happen first… or at all?

Real Steel director Shawn Levy is to produce a sci-fi thriller called Story Of Your Life based on a short story by Ted Chiang, about a linguist trying to communicate with mysterious aliens who land on Earth. The script is by Eric Heisserer (The Thing, A Nightmare On Elm Street) while prolific commercials director, Nic Mathieu will be calling the shots. [via Coming Soon]

• Syfy is currently very near to securing the rights to infamous Kevin Kostner sci-fi flick Waterworld, according to Forbes, though it’s not clear whether the network intends to remake it as a film, a film-of-the-week, a mini-series or an ongoing series. We’d recommend a series of five minute cartoons… like Wacky Races with boats.

TVLine has a couple of minor spoilers for True Blood season six. Two new regular characters will include Creighton Burrell, the governor of Louisiana, a morally murky politician with a hatred for fangers, because his wife ditched him to be with one; and Nicole Jannsen, an overly idealistic civil rights activist.
