Tweets Of The Week

One of the best (and worst) things about Twitter is that it allows creators to connect directly to their audience. Take, for example, Max Landis – son of John and writer of the excellent found footage superpower film Chronicle. After a press release went out announcing his new “superhero” show Vigilant Landis took to Twitter to clarify the situation. At length:

@Uptomyknees  I’m going to restate this because I don’t know who wrote the announcement, but: Vigilant is not a “superhero” show in ANY traditional sense.

Comparing it to “The Cape” or “Powers” or “Arrow” or “Smallville” is…just not accurate. No disrespect to those shows…

Vigilant comes at the whole equation of what a “vigilante” in a very different way. It has more in common with The Wire than Smallville.

On a similar note, it weirded me out when people called Chronicle a “superhero movie.” Chronicle is like…Carrie, basically. No heroes.

It’s a sign of the times; these days super-powers and vigilantes are just automatically lumped in with “superheroes.” #oversaturation

If Firestarter came out in 2013, they’d call it “Stephen King’s Superhero Thriller.” The superhero trope is so blurry at this point.

This ends my twitter rant for the night. God I’m so excited about C2 and Vigilant and stuff, I can’t even tell you guys.

In a time before Twitter Landis’ voice might not have been heard for weeks, if ever. And while the ability to react instantly might not always be in the best interest of a PR campaign planned to the finest detail, it certainly makes the process a whole lot more honest.
