Super Director James Gunn Is Marvel’s Top Choice For Guardians Of The Galaxy

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Slither and Super director James Gunn is Marvel’s number one choice to direct space-based superhero team flick Guardians Of The Galaxy.

(So, if nothing else, Wheden-fans are going to be expecting an appearance from Nathan Fillion now…)

It’s not a done deal, but apparently Marvel favour Gunn because of his “sensibility and his ability to mix comedy elements with action and horror.” Gunn also wrote the screenplays for the Dawn Of The Dead remake and Scooby-Doo (hey, nobody’s perfect).

We’ve previously reported that the latest rewrite for the movie is being done by newcomer Chris McCoy whose scripts impressed Marvel bosses with their quirky, comedic qualities. So it looks like Marvel is definitely going to be marketing this one with an emphasis on the humour.

(Hey, Nathan Fillion is at good at comedy…)

The Hollywood Reported also says that Peyton Reed (Yes Man, Bring It On), and the partnership of Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden (Half Nelson, It’s A Kind Of Funny Story) were also on the shortlist, and if negotiations with Gunn fall through, either of them could take over instead.

(They could always ask Gunn for Fillion’s cell phone number when they pass in the corridor…)

Guardians Of The Galaxy features such interstellar Marvel characters as Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Groot and Rocket Raccoon and is due to be released on 1 August 2014.

(Nathan Fillion as a raccoon? Oh come on… make it happen!)
