• Seems like there are going to be rival Amityville Horror films in production. While Dimension and Miramax are prepping the found-footage The Amityville Horror: The Lost Tapes, Evergreen Media Group is has just announced its own Amityville prequel, with an interesting way of getting around copyright problems. Instead of being a fictionalised account it’s a film based on the experience of two real life reporters who were involved in the original Amityville media hoo-ha. “The company has acquired the found footage of famous March 6, 1976 séance conducted by WNEW TV news in the Amityville house, ” says the press release, “in addition to their previously acquired life rights of former WNEW-TV reporters Laura DiDio and Marvin Scott to complete the rights package for their true Amityville prequel.” Interestingly the press release mentions Amityville a lot but doesn’t actually give the film a name – presumably Dimension will prevent the word “Amityville” being anywhere near the title. Can we suggest, “Hogwash?” [via Coming Soon]

• Collider reports that in test screenings, audiences have shown a preference for a bloodier, more graphic cut of Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, the fantasy film starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, due for release in January 2013. This almost definitely means it will be released R-rated in the US.
