The Amazing Spider-Man has got off to a flying (swinging?) start at the box office, even though it has so far only opened in 13 Asian territories.

The film brought in $50.2 million in total over the weekend, with Korea scoring $13.4 million, the third-highest opening for a Hollywood movie behind the last two Transformer movies, and 24% higher than Spider-Man 3 and 10% higher than The Avengers. In Japan it claimed $11.4 million, 84% of the country’s weekend box office. By comparison Ice Age 3: Continental Drift opened in nearly three times as many territories – 34 – and took less than double the box office – $78 million (though that’s still pretty impressive).

And in the US this weekend, the Seth (Family Guy) MacFarlane written & directed Ted, about a potty-mouthed Teddy bear, ruled the roost, taking $54.1 million, an amazing feat in itself, partly because it’s not a reboot, remake, sequel or comic adaptation.
