New Starship Troopers Will Feature Heinlein’s Power Suit Exoskeletons
Whatever your opinion of Paul Verhoeven’s film version of Starship Troopers, you have to admit, there was something missing. And no, you cynics, we don’t mean decent dialogue.
Anyone who’s ever read the book is left with one enduring image: the MI troops dropping towards planets from orbiting spaceships in power suits – or armoured exoskeletons. Sadly, no such images made it in to the Verhoeven film.
But the producer of the in-development remake, Toby Jaffe, tells Empire that the power suits will be back in this new big screen version.
Jaffe, who has also produced the new Total Recall (is he making a career out of sci-fi remakes?), says, “Working in a visual-effects renaissance as we are, we have the ability to do so much more now. We can do the Jump Suits, for example, which I don’t think they could have done before.”
The new Troopers will also be less violent than Verhoeven’s version: “The more expensive a film is, the harder it is now to make it that violent. With Recall in particular, we made a conscious choice to keep it tonally closer to something like Minority Report. It gives the studio, and us as producers, the opportunity to reintroduce it in a new way.”
