Just got round to reading Homer's The Odyssey and I'm enjoying it much more than I expected to.

Just finished The Book of the Dead by Lincoln Child & Douglas Preston. It had quite a thrilling first two thirds but then became a bit silly.
I also discoved half way through (when I skipped ahead and read the afterword) that it's the third book in a trilogy!. I thought that the reason I'd felt dumped into the middle of a story was brave writing! Why have publishers outside of fantasy and sf got an aversion to putting this type of information on the damn cover? It sounded like a good read from the cover blurb (and to be fair it was pretty entertaining), but I'd have picked up Book 1 first, then Book 2 etc. Will I now go and get these? Hell no, because I know how the story arc plays out. Result? One slightly cheesed off reader, and the loss of revenue for the publishers of the 1st two books because of lousy marketing. Grr. I'm now reading Necrophenia by Robert Rankin... he always makes me smile with that skewed worldview

The Twilight Herald - Tom Lloyd.
Picked up Stormcaller a fortnight ago, not being hopeful of a good read, and ended up not being able to put it down. This one is pulling me in just the same! |

ops: I'll have a look when I get home tonight Just finished 'The Forest of Hands & Teeth', a search for love and meaning in a post apocalyptic world teeming with zombies (the Unconsecrated). 'Forest' leaves a lot of questions unanswered (not sure if this is the first in a series) but still easily held my attention with strong and interesting characters as well as plenty of zombies! My full review is over Here. I was going to pick up 'Keeper of Light and Dust' (Natasha Mostert) next but picked up Robert Dunbar's 'The Shore', to check out the first couple of pages, and now I'm hooked... |

Space Cadet, how you getting on with the Nightside books? I've discovered a couple of new authors (ok they have been around but it does take me a while to realise there is a bandwagon to jump on!) and have started Mike Carey's Felix Castor books (waiting for the second installment to arrive! oh the excitement) and Rob Thurman's Caliban series (I posted about this author but never got any response, if anyone is wondering the first book is about a kid called Cal who is the product of half human, half demon breeding - the demons have some sort of plan for him but you aren't sure what until nearly the end of the book when after years spent on the run following his kidnap by his demon father and subsequent escape, he is possessed by another demon...anyway quite promising I thought) Am also waiting for The Spy Who Haunted Me, the 3rd book in Simon R Green's Secret Histories series, and something called Webmage, which was going cheap on Amazon so I thought I'd give it a go. *shakes fist at Amazon for making me spend yet more money* ...yep I'm comfort buying. I may be hating my job right now, but I am guaranteed something good to read in my lunch break for at least the next month. Hurrah! Also noticed Kate Griffin is doing a sequel to A Madness of Angels, called Mayor of Midnight which looks as though it is due out this September.

I finished a Romanian SF novel, "Abatia" (The Abbey) by Dan Dobos. I also reviewed the novel to show a glimpse of the Romanian speculative fiction. I liked this novel, it has interesting concepts and ideas and Dan Dobos proves to be a talented and imaginative author. The Romanian speculative fiction needs more such novels and authors. (my full review)

Finished reading an ARC of John Dunbar's 'The Shore' where something evil is on the prowl in the New Jersey town of Edgeharbor...
Dunbar does have a habit of not letting the background scenery keep up with the characters and this made for some infuriating re-reads. Other than that though, this book scared the life out of me! My full review is over Here. I'm now deep into Natasha Mostert's 'Keeper of Light and Dust'... |

Am most of the way through the new Dr Who book Companions & Allies, which is a short guide to all of his companions to date. Although it is fairly short and skewed towards the more recent ones, to newbies like myself it is quite interesting!
