Joss Whedon: Heroes And Inspirations

Frances Hodgson Burnett

“She wrote A Little Princess, which is my favourite book. I read it at least 10 times when I was a kid. It is absolutely a little superhero text. Her hero, Sara Crewe, is just preternaturally cool. She is just so herself from the moment she arrives on the page. She’s cool, she’s intelligent, she’s polite, she speaks different languages, and she’s just more interesting than everyone around. There are two kinds of narratives I love: the person who gains strength, and the person who just seems to have it from the get-go. And she has it. But Burnett also delineates everybody perfectly so that you understand all the characters in the book, and the group around her becomes very central to her story, and in fact they just pop out at you. I still get pumped up every time I read it.”
