Saturn Awards Nominations Revealed

Hugo and it star – Asa Butterfield (once Mordred on Merlin) – are both up for awards

The nominations for the 38th annual Saturn Awards are in, with Hugo and Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 leading the way with 10 nominations each in the film categories. The Saturn Awards will be presented on Wednesday, 20 June, by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films, which marks its 40th anniversary this year.

As is becoming increasingly common with the Saturns, the boundaries of what constitutes “Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror” at the Saturns seem to being pushed further into the realms of “and similar fings what we like”. SFX may have been questioning its right to cover James Bond, but the Saturns seems happy to include Fast Five, War Horse, Dexter and The Killing. Meanwhile the TV categories have been expanded to the point where every show on TV seemingly gets a mention, and padding out certain categories with nominees means that some distinctly average shows that should never make a short list are getting a mention (The Secret Circle… really?)

Other oddities include the Emmy Award-winning Peter Dinklage not even getting a mention for his role in Game Of Thrones, and Immortals managing to make any list that doesn’t include “worst” in the title (at least its procession of stupid hats didn’t get a mention in Best Costume, thank God). And how can two films which exist in a shared universe (Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor) be listed separately in the Science Fiction and Fantasy categories?

On the plus side, good to see some love for Hugo, The Skin I Live In, Fringe and American Horror Story.
