Sookie Stackhouse Books To End
Charlaine Harris has told PopcornBiz that the 13th of the Sookie Stackhouse books – The Southern Vampire Mysteries (that’s the series on which True Blood is based in case you didn’t get the connection) – will be the final one. “I’m writing book 12 and then there will be book 13. And then I’ll think of something else new and wonderful to do,” she said, adding by way of explanation: “I think it’ll be total closure. I don’t go back to things once I’ve finished them. That’s kind of what I do. I don’t want to write Sookie after I get stale. Yeah, I’ll miss them, I’m sure, because I have lived with them for quite a long time – 12 years now. And it did take two years to sell the first book. But I think writers like to do different things. At least this writer does.”
The fourth Underworld film now has an official subtitle. Coming Soon reports that it will be called Underworld Awakening. Directed by Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein, it will star Kate Beckinsale, India Eisley and Michael Ealy, and is scheduled for release in the US on 20 January 2012.
Not sure how “sci-fi” this is, but hey, we covered Outbreak in the mag all those years ago, and there’s a bit of a Survivors vibe so there is an SFX precedent. Contagion is a new thriller from director Steven Soderbergh about a lethal airborne virus that kills within days. Make up your own minds.
David Goyer To Write Godzilla
Deadline reports that the ever-busy David Goyer (Blade, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Superman: Man Of Steel) has been hired to write the script for the new Hollywood Godzilla movie that’s being directed by Gaerth Edwards of Monsters fame. We’re actually very excited about this.
Harry Potter 8 Sets Records Even Before It Even Opens
Warner Bros Pictures announced today that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 has broken the record for advance ticket sales in the US with more than $32 million-worth grossed already. Many midnight and first-day show times are already sold out across North America, despite the fact that the movie will be showing on more than 11,000 screens in 4,375 locations, both marking records for the Harry Potter series. Breaking another industry record, the film is being released on 274 IMAX screens nationwide.
