International Rescue swoops in! Merlin in halitosis shocker! Futurama graffiti! And lots, lots more…
IMAGE THAT WE JUST COULDN’T GET OUT OF OUR MINDS OF THE WEEK
On planet SFX, this is how the Chilean miners’ rescue looked…
JAZZ HANDS OF THE WEEK
VINDALOO OF THE WEEK
PRODUCT PLACEMENT OF THE WEEK
The “product” in question is Vancouver’s Hotel Patricia on East Hastings, the sign for which is spotlighted in episode three of the new season of Fringe (there’s a loving pan down their sign just before the chase sequence involving Olivia and bricks, and they also mention the hotel’s name in the dialogue). The reason it deserves a Spurious Award? They do EXACTLY THE SAME THING in a season four episode of Supernatural, “Criss Angel Is A Douchebag”. Clearly the Hotel Patricia really likes pocketing the cash from appearing on TV! Wonder how many other shows it’s been on?
GRAFFITI OF THE WEEK
In the same week that Banksy famously graffitied all over the opening title sequence of The Simpsons (watch below if you haven’t seen it in a zillion other places already) a new series of works from the spray can art terrorist have been spotted in London, including this tribute to Matt Groenig’s other show, Futurama.
ZOMBIE OF THE WEEK
We’ve been encouraging you lot to send us your zombified Doctor Who characters, but Robert Mangaoang, aka Doom CMYK, has been merrily creating zombies all month long. He’s on a mission to give us a zombie a day throughout October, and we reckon this Pikachu one is the best so far. Wonder if he does requests?
CAMEO OF THE WEEK
Not only does the sci-fi video for My Chemical Romance’s latest single – “Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)” – have a Mad Max vibe but who should put in a guest appearance other than comics guru Grant Morrison, playing a supervillain no less. Before he started the band, lead singer Gerard Way was an intern at DC and got to know Morrison around the time of The Invisibles. Way now also writes his own comic, The Umbrella Academy, which clearly draws some inspiration from Morrison’s run on Doom Patrol.
