Who’ll Be Running Runaways?

One site has Joss Whedon connected to the Marvel Comics movie adaptation. Another site names a different director entirely. But the two stories may not be mutually exclusive

Two sites. Two different stories. One project – a movie based on the Marvel comic Runaways, about a bunch of superpowered teens who discover that their parents are supervillains, and so, erm, runaway (there’s a clue in the title).

According to Access Hollywood, “a Marvel source told Access Hollywood that the Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Dollhouse creator is on a short-list for Runaways.

But according to Deadline New York, “Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist director Peter Sollett is negotiating to direct the youth-oriented film that is being called The Breakfast Club with superheroes.”

So, which, if either, is true? Certainly The LA Times suggested last week that Joss Whedon is on a “short-list” for the director’s chair of the summer 2012 Marvel movie, though the inference was that could be The Avengers. On the other hand it is possible that Whedon could be writing a Runaways script for Sollett to direct. After all, Runaways may have been created by Brian K Vaughan, but Whedon did a stint on the title.

Which means he could still be in the running for The Avengers. Though don’t hold your breath… Either way, looks like we’re in for a Runaways movie.
