BLOG Geek international holiday dates
It’s the last day of May today? Shouldn’t you be celebrating International Webloggers Day next month? Our own blogger Laura McConnell looks at some of the key geek holidays.

Celebrate!
The month of May is a busy one for geeks and the celebrations that go along with that title.
This year, we started our tributes early in the month with square root day, 3/3/09. The very next day was Jedi Day (May the Fourth be with you!). We continued with Star Wars Day, Geek Pride Day, and Towel Day simultaneously on 25 May. As the month draws to a close, I’m a bit sad to see so many geek holidays done for this year.
But what about the other months of the year? Surely they’ve got something to celebrate, too?
Of course they do!
25 January is Opposite Day… or not… and it kicks off the week-long video game celebration of Winter-een-mas.
12 February is Darwin Day (Charles Darwin was born on this day in 1809).
March brings us Pi Day on the 14th. How could we who denote that 3/14 (as opposed to 14/3) not think fondly of 3.14159265 on such a day? And Tolkien Reading Day is 25 March.
April is the cruelest month – no geek holidays.
June gives us International Webloggers Day on the 14th.
July represents with Evoloterra, the anniversary of the lunar landing by Apollo astronauts, on 20 July, and with Pi Approximation Day on the 22nd. (22/7. Get it? It’s your turn for geometry now!) System administrator day is the last Friday of the month, too.
That brings us to August, which seems to prove that months starting with “A” just aren’t that attractive to geeks, as it joins April in the “no geek holidays” category. And we don’t even get a TS Elliot quote out of it. That’s harsh.
In September, we’ve got International Talk Like A Pirate Day on the 19th, Hobbit Day on the 22nd, and Ask A Stupid Question Day on the last school day of the month.
Banned books week is the first week of October, and chemists giggle at 6:02 AM on the 23rd in appreciation of Avogadro’s Number (6.02 x 10 ^23) on Mole Day.
Evolution Day, celebrating the publication of The Origin of Species, is 24 November.
December gives the ninjas their chance to shine with Ninja Day on 5 Dec while the monkeys break loose on 14 December for Monkey Day. This month also blesses the world with Festivus on 23 December and Sir Isaac Newton’s birthday on 25 December.
Wow! When I set out to write this blog, I knew of about half of these holidays. A Google search gave me the rest, but I’m sure I’ve missed some. Any one out there know of others? Can we save poor April and August their embarrassment by finding one for them? I’d sure like that. We need every reason to celebrate that we can get! I hope some of you will join me in these fine traditions, and until next time, remember: Be excellent to each other. And party on, dudes!
This is a personal article by Laura McConnell, one of our bloggers. We’re pretty sure there are days to celebrate in April and August, even if that’s just a convention somewhere. Any thoughts?
