The Thing Prequel Given Green Light

Universal has given the green light to a prequel of John Carpenter’s seminal 1982 horror flick The Thing, with a script by Battlestar Galactica exec producer Ron Moore. The film will be directed by Dutchman Matthijs Van Heijningen, best known for his work on commercials (see below). He is currently developing the zombie movie Army of the Dead.

The new Thing movie will be heavily influenced by the “Who Goes There” the John W Campbell short story on which both the 1951 The Thing From Another World and John carpenter‘s The Thing were based. Set in a Norwegian camp, it chronicles how the shape-shifting alien was first discovered and overcame the inhabitants of that camp.

It seems difficult to imagine how the concept lends itself to anything other than a rehash, but hey, with a script by Ron Moore, we’re happy to be proven wrong. “I’m just working on some re-writes,” Moore told SFX just a couple of weeks ago. “They still like it and everyone is still happy. We’ll just kind of wait and see when and if it happens.” Looks like it’s happening now.
