Additional. Of course now the likes of Joss Whedon are acknowledging fan creations [http://www.evilleagueofevil.com/apply] and actively sharing them with his fanbase on the recent Dr Horrible DVD release, I believe the fan creations phenomena will grow and grow!

Not sci-fi but my partner made a spoof 70's style martial arts short starring our, at the time, 3 year old daughter. This led to a 30 minute sequel. 10 months of filming, editing, dubbing in every spare minute of his time. We had a premiere and everything! It's awesome. Yeah, I know, I'm biased...but in an interesting link (*embarrassing name drop alert*) the visual effects producer on 'The Secret of Moonacre' saw it and described it as 'a highly professional film made with unprofessional tools'.
OK, so I'm proud of him... :)
